ON BEING an ARTIST or ANOTHER OAK TREE
1995 – 2026
I remember the blossom
but
I can’t quite remember what you thought about the blossom
was it just before – in anticipation
or
the moment of full bloom
or
the memory of the moment just after
or
perhaps it was the fluttering
of the falling petals – like snow
or
was it the fallen petals
foating on water
I bought Michael Craig-Martin’s book On Being an Artist and read it from cover to cover. I enjoyed its jargon-free clarity, sprinkled with humour. As soon as I finished reading it I had an urge to cut out an oak tree through the covers and all the pages. Inside the presentation box is a text derived from the book’s uniformly positive reviews, printed in red.

PROPOSAL FOR SNEEM SCULPTURE TRAIL 2026: SILENCE
This proposal was installled as an A2 Digital print on the exact wall where it was to be painted. It was never realized, but the idea and the print remain. 5th July 2026, ongoing.
A view of the milky way in the northern hemisphere will be painted in a heavenly dark blue, overlaid with multi-coloured stars. The word SILENCE will be centre stage.
Why? Because we live in a world of constant distraction through noise – Just listen to the silence.
In 1952 John Cage the American composer created 4’33” a modernist composition which consisted of 4 minutes and 33 seconds of silence. Only ambient sounds remain, like falling rain, bird song, chinese whispers inside our heads, plus the flickering flame crackling and lighting a journey into the silent night sky.
Zen Buddhists and many others acknowledge the value of silence in providing an opportunity to reflect on our surroundings. In silence our imagination can run wild, we can dream ourselves alive.
The Film: POST – POST
WRITTEN + DIRECTED BY - PETER MORGAN
SCRIPT READ BY - CONOR LOVETT
I wrote this film script – an autobiographical monologue. The script is about a journey, a journey that is elliptical, metaphorical, and painful, that navigates bureaucratic systems like arts funding, like health care, like ticking boxes, like floating about in wonderland. It is both factual and fictional, a true story sprinkled with humour, where the world spins – just like that Japanese phrase Kondo Wa Kondo which refers to something that is happening, has just happened, or is imminently going to happen – this time, next time, or sometime! 2025

Minimal wooden interventions
Recently – well, for about the last 20 years, I have been working with wood, predominantly from felled or fallen trees: oak, birch, cherry, alder, ash, hawthorn, beech, eucalyptus, sycamore and bamboo. The natural world weathering through time is an organic sculptural process.
The work is ongoing – it’s never ending
Surely, that’s a good thing!
The work is ongoing – it’s never ending Surely, that’s a good thing!
The work is ongoing........ Surely, that’s a good thing!
Oh – and then there’s the bamboo on the beach. I make a temporary intervention: light, shadow, action, it’s another film! – another box to be ticked. I could go on – I will go on!
Little Things
Volume 2 – that’s funny really because there is no volume 1, that was Loose Buttons, but I don’t want any more buttons floating about in wonderland or anywhere else for that matter!

One more thing –
I want to design an app, or probably get someone with the knowhow to design it for me!
The title of the app is ICE – RINK. The basic idea is to create a slippery sort of thing, where there is an element of randomness. Like sometimes the app won’t work, or won’t load up, sort of frustrating and annoying and sometimes you might fall over, but if you’re lucky you would glide along effortlessly, like being on the crest of a wave, but always with the possibility of danger or pleasure in mind.
The probability of a fall, a slip, a little blip perhaps. There again you might meet someone and fall in love – literally fall head over heels. Or you might remember that tap on the shoulder – that perfect moment. Or you might just go for a walk and discover pure beauty in simplicity!
The beauty of something imperfect, impermanent and incomplete –
The balance between the pleasure we get from things and the pleasure we get from the freedom from things. A certain ambiguity, a wabi-sabi kind of thing. You know – that kind of thing!

So – just like the artist, you might also like to wander about, dreaming of the plans you are making.
The journey of epic proportions – the flights to foreign cities, the train rides through verdant jungles, the bus trips along endless highways, the boat bobbing about on the crest of a wave. While you, an imaginary you, write letters home in invisible ink to a friend. Or, to a lover who is waiting anxiously, waiting for you.
